Breastfeeding Support

WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

The Health Department offers breastfeeding education and support to pregnant women, new mothers, and women who would like to continue breastfeeding after returning to work.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are moms who have breastfed and want to help other moms succeed in nursing their babies too. By having peer counselors to talk and share thoughts, new mothers become more comfortable and confident while learning to breastfeed.

Our Forest County peer counselor for the WIC program is Andrea, who has two children of her own that were both breastfed. New mothers can take the time breastfeeding as an opportunity to spend quality time with each of them, as well as time to relax like Andrea did.

Oral Health Programs

Know the Facts About Fluoride

  • Fluoride is essential for healthy teeth to help strengthen and protect them from decay
  • The Forest County Potawatomi is the only community in Forest County that has fluoride in the water supply
  • Fluoride is found naturally in the environment but in Forest County the amount present is not enough to protect against tooth decay
  • Using fluoride tooth paste alone does not adequately protect teeth from decay
  • Children who receive recommended amounts of fluoride have less cavities than those who do not get the recommended amount

The Fluoride Supplement program can provide fluoride drops or tablets for a small fee to families in Forest County for children 6 months to 16 years of age. If the family has well water, we will provide a water test to check the fluoride level and determine the appropriate dosage. Fluoride application forms are available at our office.

The Fluoride Varnish Program is a free program for children age 6 months to 6 years, which are available at the Forest County Head Starts.

The Fluoride Mouthrinse Program provides free fluoride mouthrinse to Forest County Elementary students grades 1st to 6th.

The Dental Sealant program is offered to students in 2nd and 6th grades in Forest county for FREE. Sealants are a thin plastic coating that is painted onto the chewing surfaces, or grooved areas of the back teeth or molars. The children will receive an oral health exam, dental supplies and oral health education.  For more information about the sealant program, visit the Northwood's Dental Project website:
